Why would a doctor recommend a patient wear compression stockings for life?

I had endovenous laser ablation and phlebectomy, yet my doctor still suggests I wear compression stockings for life. I'm so disappointed. I originally wanted spider vein treated but I had to have the phlebectomies first. If I have to wear those torture devices anyway, I don't see the sense of having anything done. I had no swelling or problems other than aching, which would come and go.

I rarely recommend wearing support hose for life, unless a patient has chronic venous insufficiency with stasis dermatitis, swollen legs, and is at risk for ulcer formation. The usual patient that undergoes sclerotherapy and a closure procedure wear stockings for about 48 hours post-treatment. If they want, then they can wear stockings in the evening from dinner time until retiring but this is not essential.

I experienced severe bruising and intense pain 8 days after ambulatory phlebectomy and EVLT. I could not even touch the area from my right groin all the way down to my knee. I followed all of the doctor's orders given post-op. Upon a recheck yesterday, no infection was found, but during the ultrasound the pain upon the docs pressing the area was excruciating and I felt a burning sensation go all the way up leg. What's going on? Could I have a hematoma?
