i am 51, very active female, and just starting to get veins on my legs near the knee. Do I need surgery?
Varicose veins that are visible are removed by Sclerotherapy, which is a non-surgical procedure. If these veins are prominent and, especially, if you are having symptoms, you may consult a vein specialist so that a duplex ultrasound examination can be performed to determine if there are other veins, which may not be visible, are also involved.

You need an ultrasound exam to determine if they are bulging, varicose veins. If they are spider veins, it is considered cosmetic and treatment is elective. Either way, treatment depends on symptoms.

Often times visible veins appear when the internal superficial veins become incompetent. An ultrasound should be performed to determine the condition of the great saphenous vein (GSV) and small saphenous veins (SSV) in the leg. Once your doctor determines whether the internal veins are incompetent, he can develop a treatment plan best for your situation. Each patient is different, so not every treatment plan will be the same.

Your question is impossible to answer without a picture or more information. There are many types of veins, and not all require surgery. See a vein specialist for an evaluation.
