Is it common to need repeat sclerotherapy treatments?

I'm considering sclerotherapy, but want to know if patients typically need more than one treatment to get rid of all of the spider veins in an area.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into small veins. The vein collapses down over time and fades. It is a very safe procedure performed in an office setting. Occasionally, more than one session is required for larger spider vein clusters.

Response to spider vein treatment varies form patient to patient and even from area to area. Some spider veins may have feeder vessels deeper under the skin which if not treated may lead to sub optimal results. There are also various compounds used to inject spider veins and in varying concentrations. Laser may also be used to treat spider veins depending on the operators preference and experience. So, not to dodge your question, rather I am trying to offer an explanation of the complexity of your question and the many approaches to spider veins. I would say that rarely will one treatment suffice, and I consider spider vein treatment as a maintenance endeavor with future treatments likely to be required to maintain optimal cosmetic appearance.

Sclerotherapy is a process and usually several sessions are required. Spider veins are usually a forever problem and some spider veins will always return. Most of my patients average about 3 spider vein sclerotherapy sessions. Having said this, the results of sclerotherapy are very good.

if you have more that very few veins in a small area it usually take 2 or three treatments and will often require " touch ups " in a year or two.
