Venous Insufficiency Treatment in Katy, Texas (TX)

When the valves within your veins are unable to effectively send blood from your legs back to your heart, and instead blood pools in the leg veins, the condition is known as venous insufficiency, and it can result in a variety of physical symptoms (e.g. pain, swelling, varicose veins, spider veins and leg ulcers).

Diagnosing Venous Insufficiency

Your vein specialist will conduct a physical examination and look at your medical history, but will also conduct diagnostic tests since symptoms of venous insufficiency can resemble other conditions. They may include:
Duplex ultrasound – sound waves are used to measure blood flow and the structure of the veins in your legs
Venogram – X-rays and intravenous contrast dye are used to capture of view of your veins and study blood flow.

Treating Venous Insufficiency

Treatment often begins with self-care (e.g. wearing compression stockings, avoiding standing and sitting for prolonged periods, medication, elevating the legs and exercising regularly). However, there are a number of procedures that can be implemented.

Sclerotherapy – a chemical solution is injected into your vein with a very fine needle. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to inflame and harden into scar tissue.  The hardened tissue shuts down the vein and, over time, the scar tissue is absorbed by the body. Through absorption, the vein shrinks, making it no longer visible at the surface. To counteract the loss of the vein, blood is re-routed to the heart through healthy, functioning veins located deeper within the venous system.

Endovenous laser ablation (ELA) - a laser fiber is inserted through the skin and into your incompetent vein. The laser heats the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse, shrink and eventually disappear.

Vein stripping and ligation – this outpatient procedure involves tying the veins shut and removing them through incisions in your skin.

Valve repair – the valves can be surgically repaired via an open incision in the skin or by using a long, hollow catheter through which small instruments can be passed through and used to make the surgical repair. Repairs can include, but are not limited to, using sutures or a piece of healthy tissue (graft) to seal off areas where blood is leaking through the vein, or inserting a stent to keep the valve propped open.

Vein transplant – here, the diseased vein is replaced with a healthy vein that is taken from another area of the body.

Preventing Venous Insufficiency

Persons who are obese, pregnant or have a family history of venous insufficiency are at greater risk of developing the condition, as are those who have had leg trauma or previous blood clots. However, there are some lifestyle changes you can make to help reduce your chances of developing chronic insufficiency, including:
  • Managing your weight
  • Exercising regularly
  • Quitting smoking
  • Managing your blood pressure
  • Avoiding sitting or standing for long periods of time
  • Elevating your legs
  • Treating blood clots
  • Wearing compression stockings
