I will have a surgery to repair my torn meniscus, how long after the procedure can I have EVLT?

I had vein stripping 10 years ago. I have venous insufficiency and stasis dermatitis. I wear compression hose. I will have orthoscopic surgery for a torn meniscus in March. How long should I wait for EVLT?

Many physicians say to wait about 2-4wks, unless your physician says otherwise. The only thing different would be a possible antibiotic given after the EVLA.

I usualy will entertain treatment approximately 2 months after surgery, when you are ambulating normally.

I would wait until you are fully ambulatory, which is about 4 - 6 weeks after the procedure.

Hi,
I can't answer that question since we do not use EVLT in our office; rather, we do radiofrequency ablation.

If you are wearing compression, continue to do so on both legs. Consult with your orthopedic doctor, but everyone recovers differently.

I would wait several weeks after arthroscopy to have EVLT. There is a small benefit in having EVLT prior to arthroscopy; this may reduce the (small) risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

First, check with your vein specialist to get his opinion. In my opinion, it would be safe to undergo EVLT with or without adjuvant sclerotherapy one month after uncomplicated arthroscopic knee surgery in the absence of clotting risk factors.

I recommend a duplex ultrasound scan 4-6 weeks after your knee repair. From there, you and your doctor can determine how to proceed.

I would defer to the orthopedic surgeon doing your meniscus repair. When he tells you it is alright to move ahead with the venous ablation, I would say that is when you can proceed.

Typical arthroscopic surgery involves a relatively quick recovery. Most patients are back to work within a few days, and most activities within a week or two. Given that information, if you give it at least 2 weeks, you should be safe to proceed. This is, of course, considering the scope is non-complicated and straight forward. Only you and your doctor will know this.

EVLT is an elective procedure and you should wait to do this until you have fully recuperated from your knee surgery. Depending on your rate of healing, 4 to 6 weeks would seem reasonable.
