I went for a vein stripping surgery but the doctor decided to just do a vein ligation at groin instead. He said this would work too. is that true?

I had a duplex scan and confirmed that 2 valves, at the groin and behind my knee were nonfunctional. 2 weeks ago, i went for the vein stripping surgery but he decided to just do vein ligation at the groin. After surgery, he told my husband that i was too small to do (I am 5 feet, 100lb), (also he had another patient waiting to have vein stripping after me). During the follow up appointment, he said ligation was sufficient. Is that true? How is that possible? my leg feels so tired since then.

It is preferable to have done an ablation, as ligation will increase the likelihood of neovascularization in the groin, which will manifest itself in the next 10 years as well as proliferation of veins over the external genitalia. I would seek an expert vein specialist who will ablate the GSV below the ligated vein. You can still develop segmental reflux of the GSV in the thigh, which will create tributaries.

The simple answer to your question is no. Since the development of laser ablation procedures and foam sclerotherapy, most vein docs have gone away from ligation procedures. Think of it this way: If you have a water pipe with water running through it, and you had two holes in it at two different locations. Now your pumber comes in and fixes the first hole at the top and tells you that he fixed your problem. Did he actually fix the issue? The reason your legs are tired is because by ligating the vein at the groin, he negatively impacted your venous circulation. The result can be a sensation of fatigue, aching, swelling, etc. Find a vein doc who knows how to fix your venous circulation and your legs will feel much better.

I definitely would NOT recommend vein stripping or vein ligation! This doctor that you went to lives in the past. He's also saying things that are not proven by scientific evidence (such as you are "too small"). Today, endovenous ablation is the standard of care for venous reflux disease, which sounds like what you have. I would recommend finding a new doctor. Be sure that this new doctor is board certified and has years of experience performing standard of care procedures such as endovenous laser ablation, sclerotherapy, etc.

I had a vein stripped in April of 2012. Following the procedure, I continued to have major pain. An ultrasound found that another vein has varicosed in the same area (behind my knee). I was told that it has refluxed. How many times can you have the same leg worked on?

I had a vein that ran from the middle of my left thigh and under my knee stripped. Six weeks after the second surgery, at the front of my calf, where the bulgy vein was visible, I can see some small lumps, soft to touch (less bulgy and hard than varicose vein was), but it’s there and looks sort of dark blue under the skin. I have no bruising elsewhere and no pain or discomfort. Might it be another vein or a vein that the doctor forgot to strip? Is it too early to tell?

It has been 11 days since I had the veins in both legs stripped from my groin to my ankles. The procedure was performed on both legs at the same time. I have some soreness as expected, but the last few days the inside of one thigh seems to "tighten." I stand and stretch a minute and the tightness seems to go away. Is this normal?

I had GSV vein stripped six months ago and additional phlebectomy done two months ago. But, I can already see some blue veins on the same leg and near where the varicose vein was. They are not bulgy or ropey and my skin is smooth, but I can see them clearly under the skin surface. Are these potential new varicose veins? Can they be treated before they turn into unattractive/bulgy looking ones? How is it possible when I am quite fit, walk a lot and have very little fat on my legs.
