Many options exist for correcting painful varicose veins, but some are not as effective if the problematic veins are particularly large. A microphlebectomy, however, is an excellent procedure for eliminating these dark, unsightly bulges.
A doctor performs a microphlebectomy on an outpatient basis, and it usually takes under an hour. The process involves mapping the problematic veins through ultrasound imaging, numbing the surrounding tissue, and making small vertical incisions from which sections of the problem vein may be removed. Because these incisions are so small, stitches are not necessary and bleeding is very limited. Any scarring from these cuts is barley visible once healing is completed.
Once the microphlebectomy has been performed, the surgical area is covered with a sterile dressing and compression stockings are applied.
These are used for up to two weeks to apply continued support to the area, resulting in less bruising. Because the procedure is less-invasive than traditional varicose vein surgery, most patients can resume their daily activities the day after a microphlebectomy has been performed.
A microphlebectomy may be covered by medical insurance if the procedure is deemed medically necessary. Most of these procedures are performed by a certified specialist or phlebotomist, and you can schedule a consultation with this provider before the surgery.

About Vein Center for Women PC
The Vein Center for Women was started by combining the knowledge in venous disease and a personal interest in women’s health. The mission statement of the vein center is “beauty inside out,” as we believe that if ones inner health is good, the beauty would naturally be seen. That is exactly how we try to treat each patient. To this end, the center follows a protocol in evaluating its patients as a whole, giving them information, education and assistance in achieving “total health.”
Our treatment modalities include medical, supportive, conservative and surgical venous disease treatments. Both our latest and traditional treatments include state-of-the-art endovenous closure, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, and stab phlebectomy. We tailor them all to each patient's needs. All our patients at vein center are treated by board-certified vascular surgeons in our office.
