I received RF ABLATION OF GSV + FOAM SCLEROTHERAPY on my left leg in August. I could not wear compressive stockings owing to ulcers and small bleeding from swelled veins. Is there a negative effect from not wearing compression stockings, and can you suggest an alternative and/or a remedy?
Compression after vein treatment is important, especially with leg ulcers. CircAid makes custom compression garments which use adjustable velcro attachments and can be useful in this situation. Special compression wraps can also be used, but this requires much practice.

We think compression hose improves outcome (no science). Compression hose definitely helps with post procedure discomfort .Circaid makes a product that would work for you.

The most viable alternative to compression hose would be compression or "ace" bandage wraps.

Compression wraps are an excellent alternative.

In our office, when a patient can't wear the compression stockings, we use large ace wraps from the foot all the way up to the groin. The benefits from stockings include decreased bruising, a better result from treatment, decreased swelling during the healing time post treatment and decreased risk of complications post treatment.

It is advisable to wear compression stockings. We have access to other devices that compress just the thigh, if needed. It would have been better for your bleeding varicose veins to apply a bandage and the compression stockings on top.

Wearing compression stockings is the single most prominent complaint that I receive. People say that they are too hot, too tight, too short, too long, etc. If you cannot tolerate the stockings, then you do have options- ace bandages, circaid compression and even Unna boots. Walking and elevation of the legs will also help. Stockings help to reduce the venous pressure and improve the venous return to the heart. If you cannot use them, then you need to make the best of what you can do.

Have you asked your doctor about this? There are stocking liners and zip up stockings and wraps available for your situation.

You shouldn't need the compression hose now.
