What does the burning hot sensation after varicose vein surgery mean?

I had a main vein stripped and incisions by knee done 4 days ago. It looks like its healing well, but I am getting a burning sensation. What does this mean?

To clarify, I am assuming "main vein" means your great saphenous vein which is the long vein that runs down the middle part of your leg from hip to ankle. Unfortunately the standard of care for the great saphenous vein in modern medicine is an endovenous laser ablation not stripping. That being said, the "burning sensation" is probably due to a nerve injury from the stripping. You can not pull a vein out of a leg without damaging some surface nerves.

It sounds like things are healing, but you really need to contact the clinician that preformed your vein surgery to be sure.

Answered by Milford Vascular Institute

This is not uncommon following varicose vein surgery. A small sensory nerve may have been irritated during the surgery. This will likely resolve over the next few weeks.

Answered by Intermountain Vein Center

Possible nerve irritation along the treated vein and the nerve cells are healing themselves, possibly causing that burning sensation. You should have a follow up with your provider already scheduled for 1-2 weeks post procedure.

Answered by Vanish Vein and Laser Center

The burning is due to several factors - irritation of the nerve in the area, normal post surgical discomfort and swelling and localized irritation from the surgery. This should resolve with anti-inflammatory agents and, sometimes, warm compresses help.

Take a pain pill. You have postsurgical pain. After a week if you still have the pain, it is likely due to an injury
to tiny cutaneous nerve supplying the skin which is inevitable when the skin is cut or punctured. Discuss this with your surgeon.
