Two years ago I went to bed with a slight back ache, woke up several hours later with excruciating pain in low back and left leg, cramping and swelling in left leg and foot. The left leg and foot became extremely swollen. DVT was ruled out. I can't walk without a compression sock, and I've been diagnosed as having G/S vein reflux and told that the back and sciatica are separate issues not related to the venous problem. This all began at same time, so how is not all related to one issue?

I had a venous doppler test done to rule out a blood clot. No clot was found and showed normal venous flow. However, I still have severe swelling in my ankles and legs along with discoloration and pain. It hurts to walk or even sit down. There is a light-red rash that is above both ankles and only goes half way around the leg. It goes up only to the shin bone area and is on both legs. I've been prescribed compression stockings but if there was normal blood flow then why compression?

I just had a hip replaced. I have a compression stocking on the opposite side to the operation and am getting swelling. Should I use compression on both legs? My surgeon did not say how long to wear it and whether to wear it all the time or just at night. I will not see the surgeon until September. I am getting pain in the thigh, none where the scar is. Is this also typical? I am fairly mobile. The operation took place 4 weeks ago.

I hurt my knee badly. When I went to the doctor he prescribed me pain killers and a knee brace. The swelling was really bad and didn't change a week later, although he assured me I'd be fine in five days. A second doctor discovered it was a blood causing the swelling. He did an x-ray, but all he found was a superficial bloodclot on the medial side of my left knee. I can actually see it. My leg is still swollen. I can't bend it or put weight on it. I haven't been able to walk in two weeks.

In the morning it looks normal. This happens daily for the past 2 months. I've seen my doctor and she said she never saw anything like this and doesn't know to which doctor to send me to. I've measured my legs in diameter and the difference from morning till night is about 3 cm. What can it be?

Literally overnight I went from never having had a single problem with edema in my life to having what appears to be a chronic problem in both legs. I pushed myself hard trying to work on my bathroom 12 days ago and was up for 30 hours working (3rd all nighter in that week). The next day my lower legs ballooned up. I went on Pred which ends tonight, and got 20-30mmHg socks which I wore last weekend. Mon-Wed everything seemed good. Last night both legs started swelling up again. Am I in trouble?

At 40 I had twins by c-section. Both legs got enormously swollen hip to toe. MY OB said "eh, it happens." It self-resolved in about 2 weeks. 5 years later the same thing happened when I had another child. When she was 4 the swelling returned unprovoked and stayed for 12 years. At the ER both legs ultrasound were negative. I'm not elephantine like at the births. The swelling only goes up to my knees. I'm in pain, the skin up to the ankles is breaking down, badly discolored midway up calf. Why?
