I have a varicose vein on my left leg. Is it OK to continue moderate running and weight training which I currently enjoy on a daily basis?

I had a varicose vein removed (sclerotherapy) from my right leg 9 years ago, and would like this new vein to be treated as well. I am concerned that new varicose veins will keep developing over the years and what might be happening to the veins deep in my legs. At 41 years old, do I really need to stop or drastically reduce my normal fitness routine?

It is OK to continue. Fitness activities do not make this condition worse, and in fact are beneficial.

Being active, working out and staying in shape are all good things that you should not curtail because of varicose veins. If you are noticing new varicose veins then it is time to be re-evaluated by a vein specialist with an ultrasound to determine if you have new or untreated underlying venous insufficiency causing these new veins to appear. There is some thought that running and weight lifting will lead to varicose veins because of the increased intra abdominal pressure associated with these exercises. If it has been 9 years since your last vein then overall you are doing very well. I would NOT recommend stopping your exercise. Your vein formation may not even be related to your exercises. See a vein specialist for an evaluation of your venous valves.
