I had EVLA 12 weeks ago and still have pain in the knee area. It swells and I can't bend it well or kneel. What should I do?

My surgeon signed me off after my eight week check. He did an ultrasound and said it looked OK. He said to exercise, take Ibuprofen if it was sore, and that I was still healing. If I exercise, it then gets so swollen by the evening that I can't bend it. The pain wakes me at night. When walking it feels like a knife in the side of my knee. I will see my GP, but not for 2 weeks! What should I do?

There should be no pain at 12 weeks, so I think it is most important for you to return and be checked by the doctor that did the procedure.

It is difficult to make a diagnosis without seeing you. 12 weeks is a long time to have post EVLT pain and swelling. Your problem may not be due to your EVLT, but rather due to a knee issue. You may need see to see an orthopedic surgeon and an MRI of that area may be necessary.

Ask the doctor who performed the procedure to see you and scan the leg. You can use a topical anti-inflammatory on the area like Pennsaid or use warm packs on the area and continue to wear compression hose. I would return to see the person who did the procedure on you and discuss this with them.

Your problems sounds more like arthritic changes to the knee. See your doctor and perhaps an orthopedic surgeon for management.

You may have arthritis i.e. osteoarthritis, or bursitis, or other causes for the knee pain. You should have a x-ray done for more evaluation. You may need MRI also.
