It is probably not a good idea for her to wear compression stockings, but of course this determination needs to be made on a case-by-case basis. Have her consult with her vein specialist or primary care physician.

Your mother-in-law can still wear compression stockings, she just needs to be cautious not to re-open the wound. That said, she really needs to have her vein issues treated so that she does not bleed in the first place. I would have her get her vein issues evaluated by a board-certified vein surgeon. Bleeding varices can often be a medical indication for treatment.

She should see a vein doctor for the bleeding veins, and yes she should wear compression hose. I would recommend moisturizing her legs at night and wearing compression hose during the day. She should also consider treating the veins with a board-certified vein physician.

The best thing to do would be to treat the varicose vein that is bleeding. This can be done locally by sclerotherapy. She should also have a full venous evaluation with an ultrasound to solve her underlying vein problems leading to the varicose veins. See a board-certified vein specialist. She could wear the stocking over the vein, but this has the potential to also irritate the vein.

The answer is absolutely yes. Compression garments reduce ambulatory venous hypertension, and this would reduce likelihood of subsequent bleeding events from varicose veins and reticular veins that erode into the skin and are at risk of spontaneous bleeding.

I knelt down the other day and injured the large varicose vein over my knee. It bruised quickly and felt very sore, so I put a pressure bandage on it. Since then, the bruise has spread and is now about 12" up my thigh. It is very red, and I'm not sure what to do. Do you have any advice?
