I'm a 51-year-old smoker with large hand veins. Is this due to smoking, or could there be an underlying cause?

Typically, as we get older, we lose the body fat in our skin, hence wrinkles appearing. Smoking does compromise all systems including arteries and veins, but would not be the primary cause. Many women come to us to have these veins removed because they find they highlight the signs of aging and appear masculine-looking. This is done in the office under local anesthetic through tiny punctures (microphlebectomy). There is very little downtime associated with the procedure.

Hand veins are not due to smoking. Enlarging hand veins are usually due to genetics and aging. As we age, the hand loses volume and the veins become move prominent. Occasionally, enlarging hand veins can have an underlying reason such as a clot higher up in the arm, but then usually only one hand will be affected. There are many ways to treat hand veins. See a vein specialist.

Smoking is not likely to cause larger veins. Smoking slightly increases risks for phlebitis. If they were not there a month ago and they suddenly appeared on one upper extremity and not the other and are associated with swelling of the hand, forearm or arm, then the underlying cause may be a deep vein clot. Seek an ABVLM certified vein specialist who has an accredited vascular lab for evaluation with Doppler ultrasound and examination.

It is not due to smoking per se. The most likely cause of prominent veins in a 51-year-old is thinning skin. Smoking may play a role in thinning skin.

Why does one of the veins at the back of my left hand bulge, and only in one spot? The bulge is smaller or disappears when I raise my hand. No redness or discoloration; however, after doing research online, I feel a bit of pain. It might be because I am paranoid and I had a bad experience with an IV drip when I was a baby, so it is sensitive.

They don't bulge but are very visible and seem to darken very fast. My hand veins are almost gross because they bulge so much. I had a baby in June and was transfused. Since then my veins have seemed huge (they were tiny in the hospital). Is it normal that my arms and hand veins become so visible so quickly? I am 28 and only slightly active...maybe 3 times a week.

I am a female in my mid-twenties. I do not work out. When I feel hot, my veins protrude and become very large. It feels uncomfortable to use my hands, and I constantly have my arms raised or hiding my hands. I also have one vein in my calf that does the same. My mother was the same, only hers were much worse. I'm worried I will be the same. I have never seen veins like this and I'm worried I will live this way forever. Why is this happening? Is this hereditary? What can I do about it?

I was told I have a nodule in my lung but that it isn't big. I recently had heart attack symptoms, my blood pressure dropped to 92/53. The ER said the EKG didn't show a heart attack or stroke but I had all the symptoms. It happens often everyday and it feels like my heart is pounding out my chest. The veins in my arms will buldge and go down, then buldge and go down again. Is this something serious?

I am 27 years old and female. When I am in yoga class and having to hold a pose for sixty seconds (when my hands are raised above my head), it seems that all the blood drains from my hands and goes to my head. I get light-headed and dizzy, and have to drop my hands before the pose is over. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening?

My doctor was blasé about it. My veins are bulging a shocking amount. I rarely see anyone with more prominent veins than me. I'm very embarrassed and feel ugly and uncomfortable. My feet and hands feel very heavy. They throb and are hot most of the day. My feet swell from walking. My legs go very red and blotchy. I spend a lot of time with my hands above my head to relieve the discomfort.

My veins have started to bulge quite a bit when my hands are down, but seem to go back to normal when my hands are above my heart. Why are they now doing this? Will they eventually permanently bulge? Can I prevent this from happening?
