Should I continue to wear thigh high compression stockings on flights over 3 hrs? I've had 2 DVT's in one leg, a superficial clot and PE.

One clot was surgically removed, and didn't have problems for 23 years until I had ACL surgery. I now take 11mg Coumadin a day, for life. I also now live in Asia, and every hematologist I've talked to, doesn't agree about wearing them. I can't even get a prescription for them here, much less find any. Our flights are usually about 19-26 hours, total travel time.

Yes, you should wear your compression socks all the time, especially when flying or traveling by car for long periods of time.

Yes! Walk on flights, move your legs a lot, stay hydrated and wear compression hose.

I would recommend that anyone flying over 3 hours wear compression hose. Usually knee high is all that is required since 85% of the leg muscle pump comes from the calf muscles. I would also recommend staying well hydrated and getting up to walk every 2 hours.

We recommend everyone, even those without clotting problems, wear hose on any flights over several hours or travelling by vehicle. Additionally, staying well hydrated, walking when possible and doing the exercises recommended in the back of the flight magazines all contribute to leg health and reduction of clotting risks. As far a hose supplies go, can't you order by mail? Measure your calf, thigh and ankle circumference and length of leg in standing position. You may be able to wear knee length if your clots were in the lower legs. Thigh length if clots were above the knee.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
