My legs swell in evenings and during the night. In the daytime the swelling is gone. Should I wear compression socks overnight?

I had a radical prostatectomy 6 months ago and a number of lymph nodes were removed as part of this. In the last 3 months I have noticed the evening/nighttime swelling. Is this timing a coincidence, or is likely to be lymphoedema?

We would recommend your doctor recommend you to a lymphedema clinic that specializes in treating patients such as you. They can incorporate lymph massage, hose and possibly a pump to use at home. If you are comfortable wearing the hose at night and it helps, certainly try it.

Thanks for contacting us. Lymphedema is caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system, part of the immune and circulatory systems. This condition needs medical diagnosis and treatment.

It is most likely lymphedema. It's typical to use compression hose to control the swelling. This should occur during the day when your leg would be normal in the morning and gradually swell during the day. Put the stockings on first thing in the morning and take off at bedtime. Check with your primary care or urologist to be sure.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
