I have venous insufficiency and have one vein ablated. I wear 30-40 mmHg compression stockings, but my legs still swell when sitting/standing. Why?

You may have lymphedema. Stockings of that strength should help venous swelling.

This could be because the ablation was unsuccessful, or that there are other sources of venous reflux that your doctor missed, or it could be for other reasons, including a more proximal venous obstruction in the pelvis. It could possibly be some lymphatic abnormality or possibly medication you might be taking.

Without seeing your records it is difficult to answer. Not all swelling is caused by venous insufficiency. Even in the presence of venous reflux (broken valves), I always tell my patients that treating this may not resolve the swelling. Many times it does. If you have deep vein reflux, compression, exercise, hydration, etc. are the treatments.

There are many reasons your leg may be swelling. One is that your stockings are old and not working well. Another is that you have very bad swelling from venous insufficiency or lymphedema combined with venous insufficiency. I would consult your physician to have the swelling evaluated and get a new prescription for compression hose.

Ultrasound shows I have superficial and deep vein reflux in both legs. I am very symptomatic (heavy and achy legs) and manage this with compression stockings, elevation and exercise. Here is the greatest # on my ultrasound report: left GSV ( SFJ): 3200 ms, right SSV - mid calf: 6488 ms, common femoral vein 1168 ms on the right and 1248 on the left. Doctors do recommend procedures, but I feel I might not benefit from them. Can both the superficial and deep reflux be resolved with treatment?

I started to have achy, heavy leg feelings about a month after I sprained my right ankle and scratched my left knee last April. I was diagnosed with CVI (reflux on GSV and other veins ) through ultrasound several months later. I have no visible sign on my legs (no swelling, no varicose vein), but the heavy and achy legs torture me all the time. I can't sit nor stand in one place. Elevation instantly relieves my symptoms. Any light at end of the tunnel? I wear compression stockings religiously.

Since I started to have heavy, achy leg symptoms and being diagnosed with CVI a few months ago, I started to wear 20-30 mmHg compression stockings. It is the right tightness and helps some of my pain, but still does not get my pain under control completely. I am wondering if I can go up to 30-40 mmHg. I tried one pair of 30-40 mmHg for a day. As for the pain, it does get better, but the compression is too much to bear. I feel very uncomfortable. I don't know which level is right for me.

I had DVT 3 years ago and have had severe symptoms since. I've seen at least 4 doctors and they won't recommend a treatment. With my last doc, I asked for a referral to a vascular physician and he ignored my request. I mentioned that my legs were swollen 3 years ago and that they burn, hurt and feel like the tendon in the bottom of my foot is pulling. He did order an ultrasound, but just reported no blood clot. I had 4 EVLT procedures done in the U.S.--Lft GSV July 20, rt GSV July 22, and on July 25 SSV on both legs. I followed all instructions and wore compression stockings for 2 weeks. I have started back my exercises and wear the stockings when I do. My ankles are still swelling as the day wears on, even with stockings. Does this mean the procedures have not worked? Also, my left leg was slightly swollen before the procedures. Will the leg return to normal?

I was given an option of foam sclerotherapy treatment after a vein near the ankle bled spontaneously--as the NHS would only treat that vein and it is out of the question to have private treatment. Is there anything other than wearing compression stockings that could prevent further bleeding? I have had varicose veins for 30 years without any problems. Following the clots I was on Coumadin for 6 months and given the all clear. But since then my legs have been awful--varicose veins, spider veins, an ulcer that never opened but it's a brown lumpy mark on my leg with skin damage.
