I had my varicose vein laser ablation in my lower left leg 2 weeks ago. There is little pain in my lower leg, but why is my inner thigh still sore?

My inner thigh is very tender to touch, to walk, and it feels warm and still swollen. My incision points are healing. I took 10 cipro antibiotic pills over 5 days after surgery. I took ibuprofen for 10 days 2x 600 mg, but have now stopped. I have been walking with a cane a little every day since the surgery.

Your symptom of upper inner thigh tenderness is one of the most common post-ablation complaints that I see, and it is a perfectly normal occurrence.

After the vein is ablated, the vein starts to contract. At the same time, the tumescent anesthesia that was used during the procedure is no longer present, so you will feel increased tenderness in the area, especially the upper thigh where the saphenous vein is the largest.

Wet heat to the area and ibuprofen will help.

Everyone has a different post treatment protocol I use antibiotics only for 2 days after and ibuprofen for 8 days. It is unusual to have this much inflammation after 2 weeks. There will always be a little discomfort, more so in the thigh, as the area is tender and most of the laser energy is delivered in this area. My patients are up and around immediately and I encourage walking and returning to light exercise immediately (treadmill, elliptical and walking). What you are experiencing is extended inflammation not infection. Low heat as often as possible may give some relief, compression hose, walking and taking regular ibuprofen, aleve, etc. as directed should speed your recovery. You should be seen by your surgeon for ultrasound if concerned.

You need to see the physician that did the procedure. You also probably need ultrasound to be sure you don't have deep vein clot. Usually the ablation extends to the groin from the knee, so this could be a phlebitis but you need to be examined.

I would return to see your physician. It is not normal to have that much pain that far out. I am not sure why you took cipro unless you had an infection. You should have an ultrasound.
